Apprenticeships, internships, mentoring and more!

When surveyed in the 4th quarter of 2011, FMA and TPA member employers were asked, “what should FMA do to help alleviate the manufacturing skilled labor shortage?”

An overwhelming 80% agreed FMA should be working with community colleges, technical/trade schools and universities to help develop appropriate skills training and viable certifications.

This conference convenes annually to bring together manufacturing technology educators from community colleges, technical and trade schools and universities with manufacturing employers that have a strong commitment to programs that will produce the next generation of high- and middle-skill employees.

Employers and educators realize that well-rounded employees are developed by a combination of focused formal training and hands-on, on the job training such as that which is offered through traditional apprenticeships and inernships. They also realize that experienced employees have much to offer young, inexperienced staff, but most don’t know how to successfully tap this treasure trove of knowledge. The 2013 T.E.A.M. Summit will dedicate a full day of activity to these subjects.

Participants will tour two local employers:  Wilson Tool International and Pentair Equipment Protection Solutions. Both companies have well developed apprenticeship and internship programs and will share their secrets for success.

Who should attend?

  • All manufacturing technology instructors and program administrators from technical schools, trade schools, community colleges and universities.
  • All manufacturing company staff involved with employee training, skills development, apprenticeship program management and new employee screening and hiring.
  • Manufacturing placement specialists from temporary and permanent placement agencies.
  • Representatives from state, regional and local government placement programs and workforce investment boards (WIBs).
